Chinooks - Screening the Breeding Stock

Breeders and owners of Chinook dogs face the problem of seizures sometimes. Seizures are a form of canine epilepsy that can last for thirty minutes and longer. It is believed that Chinook dogs have a special form of seizures. The way the disease goes is different from seizures in other breeds. This condition can be life threatening for a dog. Hence, it is necessary to know the signs of the disease and be aware of the consequences of the condition.

Seizures can result from a head injury or brain infection. However, there have been cases of seizures in Chinooks without any obvious cause. It makes scientists believe that seizures can be inherited. It should be remembered that human epilepsy is often an inherited condition.

Some dogs are not affected but are the carriers of the health condition. Recessive genes that cause seizures can be present in a Chinook dog without a breeder's knowing about it. When two carriers of these genes are mated, a poor litter is produced. Therefore, it is important to be on alert for this condition and do all necessary screenings prior to breeding. Breeders and owners of Chinook dogs are encouraged to take part in a health survey that would help to make a genetic map and determine which bloodlines are susceptible to this condition.
