The Chinook dogs breed is named after explorer Arthur Walden's famous lead dog Chinook. In 1917, at a farm in Wonalancet, New Hampshire, a yellow pup was born in a litter belonging to Arthur Walden. This pup was named Chinook and he grew up not looking like either of his parents.

When two carriers of these genes are mated, a poor litter is produced. Therefore, it is important to be on alert for this condition and do all necessary screenings prior to breeding. Breeders and owners of Chinook dogs are encouraged to take part in a health survey that would help to make a genetic map and determine which bloodlines are susceptible to this condition.
