Chinooks - Appearance

Chinook Dogs are a working breed that displays much strength and eagerness to work. Its physical qualities and appearance indicate the function of the breed. The Chinook dog is of medium size. Males are usually bigger than females. The dog stands about 23-27 inches at the shoulder. The female is about 21-25 inches. Chinooks weigh from 55 to 70 pounds. Though they are working dogs, they do not look massive. The dogs are well muscled.

The breed's coat is of medium length. Chinooks have a double coat that protects them from cold weather. The outer coat lies close to the body and is coarse by touch. The Chinook dog is an average shedder. They shed twice a year and do not need much grooming. In fact, regular brushing is enough to keep them clean. Occasional baths will also help to get rid of smell.

The Chinook dog is usually tawny in color. Dogs with black markings at the corners of the eyes are preferred. The eyes are dark and of almond shape. The breed has an intelligent expression.

In fact, Chinooks are very smart. What adds to their value is devotion to the owner and stable personality. The breed is willing to work and does well as a companion. The Chinook dog is said to be good with children. These dogs are very loyal and tend to treat children right even if a child hurts them unintentionally.

Chinooks are good with other canines. However, they tend to be wary of strangers and feel timid in unknown surroundings. The breed is often reserved with strangers. Nevertheless, Chinook dogs are never aggressive and tend to make good family pets.
